DEPRESSION
Tearfulness for no apparent reason, sadness, difficulty falling asleep or difficulty staying asleep once you do fall asleep, irritability and/or withdrawal are all symptoms of depression - for adults. Children and adolescents, on the other hand, may manifest depression, differently. A child may begin to act out in ways that seem oppositional or just plain belligerent, when in reality, (s)he may be depressed. Many juvenile delinquents are simply depressed adolescents whose depression was never diagnosed and treated.
If you notice changes in your child's mood and/or behavior, take a look at his/her life and ask yourself several questions: Have there been a great deal of changes in his/her life, lately? Is his/her life filled with too many tasks to be accomplished in a day? If you had his/her schedule, when you were his/her age, would you be overwhelmed? Is his/her schedule too much for him/her to handle? Yes to any of these questions could be reasons for the changes in your child's mood or behavior. If you are not able to determine the cause or causes for the changes, then it is a good idea to seek professional help for him/her.
