RELATIONSHIP ISSUES
How did your parents relate to each other when you were growing up? How well did you relate to each parent? These are questions to consider when starting a relationship or when attempting to determine the causes of relationship problems. Parental relationships are the first relationships that we observe; parents are our relationship role models! Unless we make a conscious effort not to, we tend to repeat their relational patterns. Assess your marriage or your relationship with your significant other. Are there qualities in your interactions with each other that are similar to the manner in which your parents related to each other?
You can explore these issues on your own or you can seek the assistance of a professional. Relationship issues can be resolved on an individual basis in therapy, in which case the focus would be on helping the individual to change his/her way of relating. However, most relationship difficulties are resolved easier and more efficiently if both partners are present and willing to make changes.
If you are experiencing relationship difficulties, contact us. We can get you on the road to resolution.
By the way, if you are planning to get married, soon, consider premarital counseling. It can help you resolve, before marriage, many of the issues which cause problems after marriage and ultimately lead to divorce.
