PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS
Psychological evaluations can be utilized for a number of reasons: to assess learning disabilities, to assess personality, to assess intelligence, or to assess custody issues. These are just a few of the issues that can be assessed through a psychological evaluation.
Psychological evaluations are conducted by licensed psychologists. Once the evaluation is completed, the results will be explained to you and you will be provided with a written report. If, however, the evaluation was court ordered, the report becomes the property of the court and the psychologist is not obligated to explain the results to you. You will receive the results from the court.
Children whose parents are divorced cannot be evaluated without the consent of both parents if the parents share child custody. Psychologists must obtain written consent from both parents prior to testing a minor child, in this case.
Psychological evaluations are useful tools but should be conducted by an individual who is trained to administer and interpret them. Before having an evaluation conducted, ask questions about the individual's training and experience with the testing procedures to be used. Also ask which procedures will be used and what they assess.
